Music for the Now

In the last few years--OK, more like the last 15 years--I've completely lost track of the music scene. Beck, Moby, Coldplay, Eminem, I don't know, they're all the same to me. But I don't want to be caught in a time warp listening only to music from the eighties, so in an effort to branch out I've started asking friends what they're listening to. A young associate in our office gave me his iPod to scroll through, and although I initially didn't know how to turn it on (yes, it's really true), once I got the hang of it I was amazed at how much could be included on a single device. And how many names I didn't recognize.

I don't have much time for walking around with ear buds, but I need to get some music I love. Preferably with a melody. Without references to hos and bitches.

Any suggestions are welcome.

K--hi! Found you through Katie's blog. Great to catch up with you and the family here.

Re: music -- I can't necessarily recommend particular artists but have you played around with Pandora.com? It serves up songs based on your fave genres or artists. It's a great way to get exposure to a huge variety of tunes without much effort!

I cracked up when I read your comment about being stuck in the 80s. I did the same thing 2 years ago - asked some friends for music suggestions. My friend Sisse recommended the band CAKE and now I'm hooked. Their music is colorful and creative. I esp like Comfort Eagle and No Phone. You can borrow the CDs (yes, I still like CDs even though i own an Ipod) from the public library to see if you like them. They have fun cover art, too. Let me know what you think.
