Outtakes from the Bipartisan Household

Boy Wonder, a budding environmentalist and bird-lover, was so taken with the premise in Hoot (bad real estate developer wants to put in pancake house that destroys burrowing owls’ habitat; kids stop him) that we had a number of discussions about it this weekend.

With me (an optimistic liberal):

Boy Wonder: Why would that bad guy want to kill the beautiful creatures?
500 Jerk: Well, sometimes people care more about money than beautiful creatures. It’s called being greedy.
Boy Wonder: Are there a lot of bad guys in the world? More bad guys than good guys?
500Jerk: No, I think there are more good guys, buddy.
Boy Wonder: But how many bad guys? 100?
500Jerk: Something like that.

With his father (a real estate developer):

Boy Wonder: Why would that bad guy want to kill the beautiful creatures?
500Jerk Spouse: I don’t know, buddy. Probably because he wants to send his kids to college.

With his sister (who self-identifies as a Republican, mostly to distinguish herself from her brother):

Boy Wonder: Why would that bad guy want to kill the beautiful creatures?
Miss M: I don't know. Can we stop talking about this movie now?

I'm so glad Boy Wonder is thinking and talking about these things.
