Big Fluffy Dog

Internet, there’s so much I need to recount from the last ten days—our recent visit to the wilds of Montana; ten-mile glacial mountain hikes nervous with the potential for grizzly bear muggings; the weirdness of snow in July; the 500Jerk family chocolate cream pie-eating contests ("Pie for strength!"). But as the 500Jerk Spouse will attest, what I really want to talk about right now are dogs. Big fluffy dogs. The impractical kind of 120-pound dog that drools by the gallon, sheds copious amounts of smelly black fur, and resembles a massive stuffed animal with movable eyes. To wit:

Because this is the dog I fell in love with on the streets of Helena, Montana. A Newfoundland. A furry bear-like dog about as suited for living in the South as my displaced Yankee college professor friend who teaches ceramics at the University of Tennessee. That's right. You know who I'm talking about.

But I digress. Where was I? Oh yes, about to profess my undying love for my sweet old Tucker dog. Don’t get me wrong. I love my elderly black Labrador retriever, my adorable and loyal Tucker. She is the best girl (after Miss M, of course). After my stint in the Montana wilderness, Tucker and I had a semi-hysterical reunion dancing around each other emitting high-pitched squeals of joy. Then we sat on each other. It's what we do.

But Tucker needs a friend, don’t you think? A big, fluffy friend.

Oh, it's love. True big fluffy dog love.

Looks like Java on steroids. I think you need one. BTW, thanks for the post "fix".

The same thing happened to us in Switzerland with Bernese Mountain Dogs. Tennessee weather just forces us into so many unrequited loves: mountain dogs, avocados, and complicated sledding devices chief among them. Did you go to Glacier?

I love Bernese Mountain dogs, too; they are so beautiful. We did go to Glacier National Park--it was fanastic.

Stay posted on the big fluffy dog front--the 500Jerk spouse is actually considering it.

I am surprised that 500jerk would go on a ten mile hike in bear country with "Bearbait."

I would research more on Newfies. A friend's family had one and it didn't live as long as other breeds of dogs, and these dogs have the potential to develop serious hip issues because of their weight.

I felt comfortable hiking with Bearbait because he is such a comparatively choice grizzly bear morsel. Why would a bear eat hamburger when it can have steak?

As for Newfy health problems, I know they have them. It is sad. I still love them, though.
