Despite evidence to the contrary, he may take after his mother after all.

Talking to Tweens and Maniac Magee
In hopes of keeping communication lines open with my rapidly maturing nine year-old daughter, I've started reading Talking to Tweens, by Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer. I like the practical advice she includes in the book, and the helpful developmental information on the "middle child" stage.

I love, love, love Maniac Magee. I think it's probably second (after Charlotte's Web) on my ULTIMATE life-long reading list.
Cool--I am glad I am on the right track, having never read Maniac Magee or even heard of Jerry Spinelli until last Friday. Boy Wonder and Miss M love the story so far, and I'm having fun reading it aloud. Let me know if you have any further reading suggestions for 7 year old boys!
I wish I did. Unfortunately, I only feel (mildly) qualified to give suggestions for ages 13 and up.
I saw Spinelli do a reader's theatre version of Casey at the Bat with some other middle grades heroes (Nancie Atwell among them) at the NCTE convention a few years ago. I love that guy. He has embraced the weirdness of life, but he seems totally normal and low-key.
And by the way, I thought that was ol' BW on the KNS cover a while back! Awesome. It's a great snow-anticipation shot.
