Athene Cunicularia

We watched Hoot last night, so today we're all about burrowing owls, a small diurnal owl that lives in the ground. Boy Wonder loves birds, so it would be fun to see one.

Except that burrowing owls apparently don't live here in Appalachia.

We'll have to keep our eyes open in Costa Rica, though.

There is a raptor rehabilitation center in Clinton called the Clinch River Raptor Center. Kids can volunteer there once they are in sixth grade. It's a pretty small operation (no visiting hours or anything), but they do educational programs pretty regularly. They have a resident red-tailed hawk and several owls and kestrels.

I LOVE Carl Hiaasen!
