Magyk is a light children's read, about wizards and magic and lost princesses. Is it of the same caliber as the Harry Potter series? I don't think so, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless.
A friend recently linked me to this New York Times essay about otherwise serious-minded adults reading--and appreciating--books written for young adults and children. I, for one, ADORE children's literature. In fact, I just read The Hunger Games over Labor Day weekend, and I believe I enjoyed our recent family reading of The Wizard of Oz as much as anyone. I never tire of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and I currently have Peter and the Starcatchers loaded into my car 's CD player. But aside from the escapist pleasure children's fiction offers, there's the additional connection it provides to my daughter. Truly, one of my greatest 'tween parenting pleasures is being able to share and discuss reading material with the lovely Miss M, a voracious reader in her own right. It is wonderful to be able to pass books back and forth with her, and we've even talked about writing a book together some day.
Do you find yourself drawn to wizards, fairies, dwarves, brownies, vampires, and elves? Then you may be interested in something new my friend, G., linked me to yesterday: Modern Fairies, Dwarves, Goblins, and Other Nasties. It looks very clever and is in my queue. Also in my queue and of the same ilk is The Once and Future King, recommended by Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians.
I can't wait to read both.

I hit Bristol a week too late to see you. I hope your show went well--I was sorry to miss it. The Hunger Games was good, but after all the hyperbole, a bit of a letdown. I haven't read the others yet. Am now reading The Once and Future King--Knox County library had to dig it out of their archives. So far, I'm really enjoying it.
Have you bought a winter coat yet?
